STANSKI Zone 5 Alberta Games Try-Outs Information

Coaches will be on-hand to help inform parents and guide athlete activities but we would ask that parents be on-skis and near-by (particularly for those parents of Mini-Midget age athletes) as well so that if any athletes need specific unique needs that they can be dealt with easily without detracting from the rest of the athletes preparations.

Date: Saturday, December 17, 2011

Location: Strathcona Wilderness Centre

Zone 5 Meeting Location:

West End of Program Building (the end of the building you first come to as you drive in; often has ski racks in front). Look for man in bright red jacket (that’s me).

Technique & Ski Preparation: Free* (Ski Skating)

If your child only uses one set of skis for both classical and skate techniques, it is very important that you ensure that their grip wax is completely cleaned off. It is idea to glide wax (warm glide wax for -2 to 3 degrees) the skis from tip to tail but if that is not feasible (or you don’t know how), then just bring the skis fully cleaned to the race and have the coaches’ check the skis and see what can be done on-site to speed up the skis before the race (coaches will have some optional wax to add that will improve glide for the race).

Distances:

Mini-Midget (boys/girls): 2.5km

Midget (boys/girls): 3km

Juvenile (boys/girls): 5km

Recommended Morning Plan:

Wake Up Time: 7:00AM

Finish Breakfast*: 7:20AM (*eat something that is easy to digest and drink a full glass or two of water)

Shower/Dress/Pack: 7:20 – 7:45AM

Drive to Strathcona Wilderness Centre: 7:45 – 8:45AM

Unpack vehicle, put skis at ski rack, change into boots and get to zone 5 meeting place: 8:45 – 9:00AM

Zone 5 – Race Course Review and Technique Tune-Up:

As some athletes and coaches may show up at different times, we will plan to have coaches available to lead this starting at the following times. We recommend you arrive at the venue about 15 minutes before these times so you have time to get oriented, change into boots, and be ready to ski.

1st Race Course Review: 9:00 – 9:30am

2nd Race Course Review: 9:30 – 10:00am

Recommended Final Hour Pre-Race Schedule (after course review):

10:00 – 10:10: inside and go to the washroom

10:10 – 10:20: pick-up bib, put it on and head toward stadium/start/warm-up area (coaches will be around to help ensure everyone knows where this is)

10:20 – 10:30: Easy warm-up on skis

10:30 – 10:40: A little harder than “easy” warm-up on skis (not race intensity but a bit harder than ‘easy’)

10:40 – 10:50: higher intensity warm-up (on or off skis)

10:50 – Start: take off warm-up clothing (if you have it on), take a drink of water, get close to start line, and get ready to race.
